Energy Transport by Nonlinear Internal Waves

چکیده
Wintertime stratification on Oregon’s continental shelf often produces a near-bottom layer of dense fluid that acts as an internal waveguide on which nonlinear internal waves propagate. Shipboard profiling and bottom lander observations capture disturbances that exhibit properties of internal solitary waves, bores and gravity currents. Wave-like pulses are highly turbulent (instantaneous bed stresses are 1 N m−2), resuspending bottom sediments into the water column and raising them 30 m above the seafloor. The waves’ cross-shelf transport of fluid counters the time-averaged Ekman transport in the bottom

Nonhydrostatic and nonlinear contributions to the energy flux budget in nonlinear internal waves
[1] We use high-resolution two-dimensional simulations to model the generation and evolution of nonlinear internal waves formed as a result of the interaction of a first-mode internal wave field with idealized slopes. The derivation of the energy equation and the energy flux terms are presented. By employing an analysis of the distribution of the energy flux across the shelf break, we quantify ...
متن کاملEnergy of internal modes of nonlinear waves and complex frequencies due to symmetry breaking.
Considering a class of Hamiltonian systems, it is demonstrated that energy of the internal modes with real frequencies supported by nonlinear waves and appearing due to perturbations breaking a continuous symmetry has its sign determined by the symmetry itself, independently of the nature of the perturbations. In particular, it is shown that negative energy modes emerge as a result of the break...
متن کاملVertical heat flux and lateral mass transport in nonlinear internal waves
[1] Comprehensive observations of velocity, density, and turbulent dissipation permit quantification of the nonlinear internal wave (NLIW) contribution to vertical heat flux and lateral mass transport over New Jersey’s shelf. The effect of NLIWs on the shelf heat budget was significant. On average, heat flux in NLIWs was 10 times larger than background at the pycnocline depth. NLIWs were presen...
متن کاملA Study of Bit Condition for Generation Rx -Mode Waves: Interaction of Particles with Z/UH-Mode Waves
Interactions of charge particles with electromagnetic waves have important effects (linear and nonlinear) on the propagation of electromagnetic waves, and it can somewhat play a role in generation of the new mode waves. Besides, the particle energies can play an important role in causing instability in plasma. The values of parallel energy of the particles have been calculated so that they can ...
متن کاملInternal solitary waves of elevation advancing on a shoaling shelf
[1] A sequence of three internal solitary waves of elevation were observed propagating shoreward along a near-bottom density interface over Oregon’s continental shelf. These waves are highly turbulent and coincide with enhanced optical backscatter, consistent with increased suspended sediments in the bottom boundary layer. Nonlinear solitary wave solutions are employed to estimate wave speeds a...
